What is the difference between panels at carcass height and floor-standing panels?

What is the difference between panels at carcass height and floor-standing panels?

Panels at carcass height end above the plinth and frame the cabinet body with a perfect fit. The plinth panel runs continuously in front of the cabinets, creating a calm, linear front appearance – ideal for modern, handleless kitchen plans.
Example: Base cabinet panel UWK10, height 72 cm, depth 25–58.3 cm.

Floor-standing panels extend to the floor and finish with a floor profile and panel shoe (in black 010 or stainless steel look 014). They conceal the plinth at the side, increase stability, and provide a solid, high-quality finish – typical of a distinctive end panel.

Planning recommendation for floor-standing panels

The total height of floor-standing end panels depends on the plinth height of the surrounding base cabinets.

For the base cabinet panel UWA, the following standard dimensions apply:

  • 79 cm panel height → plinth height 7 cm

  • 82 cm panel height → plinth height 10 cm

  • 87 cm panel height → plinth height 15 cm

  • 92 cm panel height → plinth height 20 cm

This gradation ensures a harmonious overall appearance and guarantees that the floor-standing panel finishes exactly in line with the plinth height of the adjacent cabinets.

Planning tip:

  • Carcass-height panels
ensure a continuous plinth line and a light, “floating” appearance.

  • Floor-standing panels
emphasize the side finish, provide additional stability, and protect the plinth area from bumps and mop water.

Optionally, additional stability can be achieved with the WSTW support bracket – particularly useful for tall or heavily loaded panels.

What is an end panel?

End panels primarily serve as a design element in kitchens. However, Nobilia end panels are necessary, for example, for pulled-forward plans, or to install electrical appliances such as dishwashers, (fully) integrated refrigerators, or wine coolers at the end of a run under the worktop. End panels therefore prevent a view behind the kitchen run and ensure a clean kitchen finish.

What thicknesses are available for end panels?

Nobilia offers end panels in thicknesses of 10 mm, 16 mm, 25 mm, and 50 mm. The 16 mm version is especially popular: stable yet discreet. It emphasizes the modern slim-line look of the kitchen.

What side depths are available for end panels?

Nobilia end panels are precisely matched to the company’s own range and grid dimensions – ideal for new purchases or expanding existing kitchens. As standard, they have a side depth of 58.3 cm. For room-planning panels, the depth can be selected flexibly between 25 cm and 116.6 cm.

For handleless Line N kitchens, Nobilia offers front-flush end panels with a depth of 59.8 cm. These perfectly compensate for the 15 mm pulled-forward front and ensure a harmonious, continuous line appearance.

What types of end panels are available?

Kitchen end panels are available in 4 different types: end panels, carcass panels, room-planning panels, and intermediate panels.

End panels

End panels are planned floor-standing. Their height is determined by the carcass height and the plinth height of the enclosed cabinet. End panels for base cabinets, sideboards, highboards, and tall cabinets are fitted with a panel shoe as standard. This prevents cleaning water from penetrating and thus prevents the panel from swelling. The floor profile and cover caps are supplied in 014 stainless steel look or 010 black.

Carcass panel

Carcass-height panels frame the cabinet carcass and leave the plinth area free. This allows for continuous plinth lines and thus a particularly uniform kitchen appearance.

For planning, the measurement is taken from the top edge of the cabinet to the bottom edge of the cabinet. The plinth is then continued at the side.

Floating look with carcass-height panels

Carcass-height panels end above the plinth and make the cabinet body appear to float visually. The side plinth return aligns flush with the front plinth panel – creating continuous, calm lines. The result is an elegant, light look that is especially effective in modern kitchens. At the same time, the open plinth zone makes cleaning easier: robot vacuum cleaners can also move under the cabinets without obstruction. In comparison, floor-depth panels look more solid and visually close off the plinth.

Room-planning panels

Room-planning panels are used especially in island and block plans when cabinets are placed back-to-back or combined with different depths. This creates a visible joint edge between the cabinet backs, which is neatly covered with a room-planning panel – for a uniform, high-quality appearance.

The major advantage: room-planning panels are cut to size at the factory – in both height and width. This means they can be adapted precisely to any plan, whether at carcass height or floor-standing.

Typical dimensions and areas of use:

  • 61.9 cm: For single-sided islands with cabinets in 56.1 cm side depth.

  • 80.7 cm: For double-sided islands with LINE N cabinets in 56.1 cm side depth and frame part in 20.2 cm side depth.

  • 95.5 cm: For double-sided islands with cabinets in 56.1 cm and 35 cm side depth.

  • 106.6 cm: For double-sided islands with cabinets in 56.1 cm and 46.1 cm side depth.

  • 116.6 cm: For double-sided islands with cabinets each with 56.1 cm side depth.

Conclusion: Room-planning panels are indispensable for harmonious island planning, as they elegantly conceal transitions while also enabling the kitchen to be individually dimensioned

Intermediate panels

Intermediate panels create the appearance of a cabinet framed by panels without cladding the entire carcass. They are about half as deep as a standard panel and are therefore more cost-effective in planning. Ideal for anyone who wants the elegant panel look but does not need the full material use.

This preserves the design and lines – with reduced effort and an optimal price-performance ratio.

Rounded panels

How have the panel dimensions for Nobilia wall cabinets changed?

Up to and including 2020, Nobilia wall cabinets had a carcass depth of 32 cm.
The corresponding panels had a side depth of 34.7 cm in order to finish flush with the front and carcass.

From 2021, the side depth of wall cabinets was changed to 35 cm. Since then, all panels have been produced with the accordingly adjusted depth.

If you would like to clad a wall cabinet from the range up to 2020, you can use a base cabinet panel (UWKR) for this and adjust its depth individually.

The reason: the wall cabinet heights correspond to the base cabinet heights in the Nobilia grid.

  • Wall cabinet 72 cm carcass height (-1) → base cabinet 72 cm carcass height

  • Wall cabinet 79.2 cm carcass height (-2) → XL base cabinet 79.2 cm carcass height

  • Wall cabinet 86.4 cm carcass height (-3) → Maxi base cabinet 86.4 cm carcass height

The base cabinet panel UWKR is cut to height at the factory and can be adjusted in depth. This means even older wall cabinets can be clad with panels precisely and cleanly.

What material are end panels made of?

Nobilia end panels are made of high-quality MDF boards (medium-density fiberboard). Under pressure and heat, wood fibers are pressed with resin into a dimensionally stable board. The advantage: MDF can easily be cut on site without the edges fraying.

The panels are manufactured according to the same strict quality criteria as carcasses and fronts. This gives you a robust, durable material that visually matches your Nobilia kitchen perfectly and will reliably support your kitchen routine for many years.

What colors are end panels available in?

Nobilia end panels are available in 9 material and color groups. This allows you to match side panels precisely to the front range, carcass color, and worktop.

When must an end panel absolutely be included in the plan?

An end panel is always required when an appliance is located at the end of a run. It forms the side finish and prevents a direct view behind the furniture. This applies in particular to (fully) integrated dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, and wine coolers under the worktop.

For 10 mm thick panels, a support bracket (WSTS) must also be included in the plan. Pulled-forward base and tall cabinets also require side panels. They frame the front flush and protect against side visibility.

When do I choose an end panel and when a filler strip?

Filler strips can be used to close larger gaps between cabinet and wall flush. We recommend a front filler strip as soon as the distance to the wall is at least 30 mm. If the distance is smaller, an end panel should be preferred. It is usually easier to install, forms a clear side finish, and ensures a calm, rounded overall impression of the kitchen.

How do I install end panels in my kitchen?

Nobilia end panels are screwed to the cabinet carcass using the supplied wood screws. Pre-drill the screw holes with a suitable wood drill bit – this reduces the risk of the panel surface splitting.

Optionally, you can glue the panel to the carcass with waterproof D3 glue. Please note: later removal without damage is then generally no longer possible.

Floor-standing end panels feature a panel shoe with cover caps included in the scope of delivery. This forms the clean lower finish and protects the panel against swelling material caused by mop water. Floor profile and cover caps can also be purchased separately if needed in 014 stainless steel look or 010 black.
