Overhead cabinets are cabinets that use the free space above a freestanding refrigerator or tall cabinet to create additional storage and visually close the kitchen run.

They are mounted above the appliance and ensure that the refrigerator and cabinet run appear as a single piece of furniture – with no gap at the top.

Nobilia overhead cabinets are available in several heights and two depths. Depending on the type, the models are equipped with a flap, 1 door, or 2 doors.

Yes. Thanks to integrated heavy-duty hangers (DCSA & WINS), Nobilia top cabinets and overhead cabinets can also be used as wall-mounted, extra-deep wall cabinets. The fittings are suitable for concrete, sand-lime brick, and perforated brick, and reliably support even heavy, depth-reduced carcasses.

In modern designs – as often seen on Pinterest or Instagram – the extra-deep top cabinet is mounted flush with the top edge of the tall cabinet. Below it, a classic 36 cm wall cabinet with a depth of 35 cm follows, creating an elegant two-level look.

For a clean transition, a thin cover shelf (10 mm or 16 mm, e.g. ADB1059 / ADB1659) is recommended, as it conceals the underside of the upper cabinet and completes the lines. If you want a particularly clean front design, you can also plan the cabinets handleless with Push-to-Open (PTO5-BS).

An American side-by-side refrigerator can be perfectly integrated into the kitchen run with Nobilia overhead cabinets. You combine an overhead cabinet with a depth of 56.1 cm, two end panels, and a cover shelf so that the refrigerator looks like a complete appliance surround.

How to plan the surround step by step:

1. Choose the depth: Use a Nobilia overhead cabinet with a depth of 56.1 cm so that it sits flush above the refrigerator.

2. Plan side panels: Use two end panels (HWR) to frame the refrigerator at the sides and visually complete the appliance area.
   Tip: The panel should extend to the end of the refrigerator carcass – not to the end of the door. This allows the doors to open fully without hitting anything.

3. Select a suitable overhead cabinet: Choose a UFK cabinet that is slightly wider than the refrigerator. Pay attention to the available heights (28.8–72 cm) for a harmonious overall look.

4. Install a cover shelf: Fit a cover shelf underneath the overhead cabinet. It conceals the underside of the cabinet and ensures a clean, enclosed appearance.

5. Check the door opening angle: Make sure the side-by-side does not catch on the panel when opening – especially with wide freezer compartments that need to swing fully open.

6. Consider custom dimensions: If the width or height does not fit, Nobilia can adapt the panels or the UFK cabinet at the factory – ideal for tight niches or tall appliances.

To prevent the overhead cabinet from looking like an “added box,” the right accessories are needed: panels, filler strips, cover shelves, and ceiling filler panels neatly close side joints, ceiling areas, and appliance edges and ensure a continuous front appearance.

All panels are available in numerous finishes, e.g. matt, high gloss, lacquer laminate/lacquer, premium matt, lacquer ultra-high-gloss, lacquer matt, perfect matt, lacquer high gloss, and Xtra decors.

Cover shelves are used:

• between a top/overhead cabinet and a wall cabinet

• above refrigerators or tall cabinets

• to conceal cabinet undersides and complete the lines

Thin cover shelves with a thickness of 10 mm or 16 mm are especially recommended (e.g. ADB1059 / ADB1659), optionally in front, worktop, or carcass decor. They provide a flush finish and visually connect cabinet runs into one block.
