Nobilia cover panels - 50 mm thickness

A 5 cm thick cover panel is the most substantial thickness class at Nobilia and finishes highboards, tall units, and sideboards with a visible top edge. Where the slim line recedes, the laminate panel frames the furniture and creates a design accent. Nobilia offers the 5 cm thickness in two versions: a cut-to-size range for entire cabinet runs and a fixed range for individual highboards in widths of 55, 60, or 70 cm. Filter by depth and width to find the right version for your plan.

Find a 50 mm thick cover panel

The filter leads to the 5 cm thick cover panel via two axes: depth and width. The depth follows the carcass depth of your furniture, and the width follows the desired dimension of an individual version or an entire cabinet run.

Filter by depth

Three depth classes cover the common carcass depths. 37.4 cm fits sideboards with a 35 cm carcass depth. 58.5 cm fits highboards and tall units with a 56.1 cm carcass depth and offers the largest selection because both the fixed and the cut-to-size range include this depth. 117 cm fits corner layouts and carcasses over 60 cm deep.

Filter by width

Four widths cover the two versions in this thickness. 55 cm corresponds to a dishwasher housing unit with a 45 cm carcass width and covers the cabinet with an overhang. 60 cm fits directly on a highboard with a 60 cm carcass width. 70 cm corresponds to a dishwasher housing unit with a 60 cm carcass width, also with an overhang. 258 cm is the maximum length of the cut-to-size range and spans a cabinet run made up of several sideboards or highboards.

What a 50 mm thick cover panel is

A 5 cm thick cover panel is the most substantial thickness class in Nobilia’s cover panel range and finishes highboards, tall units, and sideboards with a visible top edge. The core panel is made of engineered wood with laminate coating on both sides, edged at the front and sides with a polymer edge in the carcass color. The rear edge is left unfinished as standard because it is usually positioned against the wall.

The 5 cm thickness visually frames the furniture below and gives the top edge visible weight. It is planned where a slim line would recede behind the effect of the fronts. This thickness class comes in two versions. The cut-to-size range covers cabinet runs in custom dimensions, while the fixed range covers individual highboards from 60 to 70 cm wide.

Which cover panels fit your cabinets?

In 5 cm thickness, Nobilia offers two versions that depend on your cabinet configuration. One cut-to-size range spans several sideboards or highboards placed next to each other. One fixed range covers a single cabinet in widths of 55, 60, or 70 cm.

Three fixed depth classes cover the common carcass depths. 37.4 cm fits sideboards with a 35 cm carcass depth, 58.5 cm fits highboards and tall units with a 56.1 cm carcass depth, and 117 cm fits corner layouts and side-by-side refrigerators. The substantial thickness visibly frames the run and creates a design accent at the top edge.

How to plan your 50 mm thick cover shelf

Side panel thickness and side panel depth

The side panel thickness and side panel depth match the cover shelf so that the front edges of the shelf and side panel align in one line. Nobilia also offers tall-unit side panels in 5 cm thickness, whose depth is factory-matched to the shelf depth. For appliance conversion units for dishwashers or washing machines, two end panels in the same thickness complement the cover shelf to form a frame around the appliance

Wall cabinet connection in the same line

Wall cabinet connection in the same line is not consistently plannable with the 5 cm cover shelf because the wall cabinet top cornice shelf is only offered in 1.6 and 2.5 cm thicknesses. If you are planning a continuous top edge across tall-unit and wall-cabinet runs, either choose both thicknesses to match or create a deliberate depth offset.

Overall height of the tall-unit run

The overall height of the tall-unit run is the sum of plinth height, cabinet body height, and cover shelf thickness. With a 208.8 cm high cabinet body, a 15 cm plinth, and a 5 cm cover shelf, the top edge of the shelf is at 228.8 cm. If you need a specific final height to the ceiling, include this thickness in your calculation.

Sakura design variant

The Sakura design variant cannot be combined with 5 cm thickness because it is only offered in ADBS16 with 1.6 cm thickness. If you are planning a Sakura look with Como Oak reproduction and screw-on handle 315, you stay with the thinner 1.6 cm variant.

Adjustments to the cover shelf

At 5 cm thickness, Nobilia offers only one adjustment for the cover shelf: rear edge banding. The rear edge is unbanded as standard because it usually sits against the wall. If you are planning the shelf with a visible back edge, for example freestanding above a wall cabinet run or as a peninsula in the room, order the banding under code ADB-K 5 as a surcharge item. The banding uses the same polymer edge as the front and side edges, so the shelf is closed all the way around. It is charged per commenced 10 cm of length, with a minimum order quantity of 60 cm.

Installation

A workshop video shows the two steps of highboard installation with a 5 cm thick cover shelf.

  • In the first step, the factory-routed cutout for the LGADB ventilation grille is already prepared in the shelf. The grille directs the heat from built-in appliances out of the cabinet body.

  • In the second step, the installer places the shelf on the highboard cabinet body. The 5 cm thickness accommodates the cutout with reserve, because enough remaining profile is left all around.

Nobilia does not offer a tongue-and-groove joint for corner layouts with the 5 cm thick cover shelf. If you want to join two shelves around a corner, plan either in 1.6 cm thickness with the Slim Line joint APSL-NF or in 2.5 cm thickness with the standard joint AP-NF.

Frequently asked questions about 50 mm thick cover shelves

A 5 cm thick cover shelf is a design choice against a slim line. The 5 cm visibly frames the furniture below and gives the top edge a visual weight that a 1.6 or 2.5 cm thick panel does not provide. If you want the front to remain the main design surface and the top finish to recede, plan instead with a thickness of 1 or 1.6 cm.

Delivery of your cover shelf

Nobilia manufactures the 5 cm thick cover shelf in Verl; delivery usually takes place three to five weeks after ordering. Shipping within Germany is free.

The cut-to-size range leaves the factory made to your required dimensions, with the depth, length, and edge finish specified when ordering. The fixed range in widths of 55, 60, or 70 cm comes in the standard size without further cutting. If you also order the rear edge banding ADB-K 5, the shelf is delivered from the factory closed all around with a polymer edge.

On site, you place the shelf on the cabinet body and secure it according to the manufacturer's specifications. Because of the solid panel thickness, we recommend planning delivery to the installation site with two people. If you do not handle the installation yourself, we can arrange an installation partner from your region. Talk to us before ordering so the delivery date matches the installation.

Sustainability at Nobilia

The core board of the 5 cm thick cover shelf is based on a three-layer chipboard with up to 70 percent recycled content. The virgin wood for the top layers comes from PEFC-certified forestry operations with controlled reforestation. After its service life, the material can be fully returned to the material cycle. In Verl, the photovoltaic system at Plant III supplies around 2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, covering about half of the plant's electricity demand. The wood waste from panel production heats the factory halls during the winter and thus replaces fossil heating energy.
