Cover panels are upper finishing components for tall cabinets, sideboards, and wall cabinets that close off a cabinet run with a continuous horizontal line. Four thicknesses from a slim 1 cm to a substantial 5 cm variant cover every style direction, available in all common front colors, decors, and worktop decors. Beyond classic tall cabinet and sideboard applications, the cover panel serves four additional functions: as a window sill, a finish for sideboards and coffee counters, cladding for appliance niches, and a shelf between two end panels.

Find the right cover panel
You can find the right cover panel by thickness, depth, and width. Variable dimensions cover multiple cabinets in one continuous plan, fixed dimensions individual highboards, tall cabinets, and wall cabinets. Thickness is a design decision and at the same time determines material and color. The full dimensional logic is explained in the planning knowledge section further below.
Find a cover panel made to measure
Thickness
The thickness indicates the material thickness of the cover panel and determines the available material. Laminate is available in all four thicknesses, lacquer only in the slimmer dimensions. 1 cm creates a narrow, modern line. 1.6 cm offers the largest range. 2.5 cm appears calm and present. 5 cm gives a piece of furniture a substantial frame.
Depth
The depth depends on the carcass depth of the furniture to be covered. 37.4 cm fits sideboards and wall cabinets. 58.5 cm fits tall cabinets and highboards. 48.5 cm is the standard depth of the real wood veneer range. For particularly deep carcasses or corner plans, the depth can be set variably from 60.1 cm to 117 cm.
Width
The width indicates the longest dimension of the cover panel and follows two planning cases. Fixed widths cover a single cabinet: 45 to 50 cm for the narrow dishwasher conversion unit, 60 cm for the standard highboard, 62 to 70 cm for the wide conversion unit. Variably, the width ranges from 25 cm to 258 cm for entire cabinet runs.
Find a cover top by look
Anyone adding to an existing Nobilia kitchen knows the front color number and looks for the cover top in the same decor. The front color number leads to the fine class, meaning the decor group such as matte or high gloss in which the decor is listed. The fine class belongs to a material class and also determines in which thicknesses the cover top is available. This means the fine class determines the thickness, not the front color directly.
Three thickness limits are fixed in the range. Decors in the high-gloss fine class are only available from 1.6 cm thickness. Ultra high-gloss lacquer and Perfect matt lacquer are available exclusively in 1.6 cm. The remaining lacquer and lacquer laminate fine classes are available in 1 and 1.6 cm, not in 2.5 or 5 cm. Function of cover panels
What cover panels do in kitchens
The cover panel sits on top of the cabinet carcass and closes the upper edge in one line across multiple cabinets. In wall cabinet configurations, this task is performed by the cornice panel. This distinguishes the cover panel from the worktop, which serves as the working surface between sink, cooktop, and preparation zone, and from the plinth, which connects the cabinet to the floor at the bottom.
Nobilia cover panels consist of a wood-based support board coated on both sides, coordinated with the selected front program. At the front and sides, they are finished with a polymer edge so that the cut edges neither splinter nor absorb water. The rear edge is unfinished as standard and can also be edged on request.
What cover panels are used for
Cover panels are used in kitchen planning and in other rooms for several typical applications. The following scenarios cover the most common areas of use, from tall cabinet runs and highboards to sideboards and window sill cladding. Tall cabinet run
The cover panel creates a continuous line above a row of tall cabinets standing next to each other. In the overall look, the vertical joints between the fronts remain visible, while the horizontal joint between carcass and cover panel runs continuously at the top. In this way, the cover panel visually combines several tall cabinets into one coherent unit instead of leaving them as individual cabinets standing side by side.

The freely cut-to-size laminate range goes up to 258 cm in width and thus spans up to four tall cabinets with 60 cm carcass width each. The standard depth is 58.5 cm and matches the tall cabinet carcass depth of 56.1 cm. The planning knowledge section further below shows which width and depth fit your tall cabinet run.

In lacquer, the tall cabinet run is available in four fixed width classes: 93.6 cm, 123.6 cm, 153.6 cm, and 183.6 cm. You choose the class that covers your cabinet run and trim it down if necessary. The depth remains variable from 58.5 cm up to 60 cm. If the width is trimmed, Nobilia applies a polymer edge to the cut edge.
Highboards and sideboards
Highboards and sideboards are low enough that their top surfaces are visible. The cover panel creates a flat, abrasion-resistant surface there and holds decoration, plants, or kitchen accessories. If several highboards or sideboards stand next to each other, the cover panel combines their top surfaces into a closed, continuous top view instead of letting each cabinet top end individually.

Highboards with built-in electrical appliances such as an oven, microwave, or fully automatic coffee machine require a ventilation grille in the cover panel, because otherwise the heat from the appliances builds up in the carcass. The LGADB grille is available in 1.6 cm, 2.5 cm, and 5 cm thicknesses. The 1 cm thick cover panel is not suitable because the material thickness is too small.
Combination of wall cabinet and tall cabinet
The cover panel combines the wall cabinet and tall cabinet into a shared upper finishing line where both cabinet types are planned next to each other in one run. The standard cover panel sits on the tall cabinet carcass, while the wall cabinet is finished at the top with the cornice top panel in the same panel material. This creates a continuous upper edge for the kitchen run, even though it consists of two cabinet types with different depths.

The combination works most cleanly with wall cabinets in the carcass depth of the tall cabinets. Fridge bridging cabinets have the same carcass depth of 56.1 cm and therefore align flush with the tall cabinet row, so that the cover panel runs flush right and left with the cabinet width across both cabinet types. This keeps the upper edge at one height across the entire kitchen run and without any depth offset.

Standard wall cabinets with a 35 cm carcass depth create a depth offset at the upper edge next to the tall cabinets, which you plan as a deliberate step. The upper finish of the wall cabinet is provided by the KBW cornice top panel, which transfers the panel material of the cover panel to the top edge of the wall cabinet and is available in a depth of 37.4 cm for 35 cm deep wall cabinets as well as in 58.5 cm depth for wall cabinets in tall cabinet carcass depth. Side-by-side refrigerators stand freestanding within the kitchen run because their width of around 90 cm and their depth of 60 to 75 cm do not follow any cabinet grid. The cover panel spans across the refrigerator and the adjacent cabinets at the sides, bringing them to a shared top edge. This integrates the freestanding appliance into the kitchen run instead of making it protrude as a separate block.

The freely cut-to-size laminate range extends up to 258 cm in width and adjusts the dimensions precisely to the combination of refrigerator and adjacent cabinets. Side-by-side appliances need clearance at the sides for opening the doors, so the niche is planned wider than the appliance dimensions alone. Because the appliance is deeper than a standard cabinet run, you choose the cover panel depth according to the appliance depth.
Freestanding appliances with end panel frame
An appliance housing cabinet stands at the end of a run or freestanding in the room and needs a side finish there. Two end panels and the cover panel on top together form a frame around the housing cabinet and close it off on the open sides. This makes the conversion unit appear as a framed piece of furniture in the kitchen instead of ending with a raw cabinet side.

Appliance housing cabinets for a washing machine or tumble dryer require end panels or a side wall as a finish or for a freestanding solution. A design with panels on both sides in 1 cm thickness is technically not possible; stronger panel thicknesses are required here. The planning guide further below shows which panel thickness suits your design.
Coffee counter
A coffee sideboard is a standalone piece of furniture where the coffee machine, cups, and accessories have a fixed place. The cover panel forms the top surface there and provides the machine with a flat, abrasion-resistant base. At 1 or 1.6 cm thickness, this finish appears slimmer than a worktop, so the sideboard stands low and understated next to the kitchen run.

The coffee sideboard is a storage surface, not a work surface. It is not intended for cutting or handling water; that remains the job of the worktop. If a mini fridge for milk and drinks is planned below, the cover panel provides the upper finish of the piece of furniture. Shelf made from cover panel and end panels
A cover panel and two side panels together create a freestanding or wall-mounted shelf. The cover panel forms the bottom, and the panels support it at the sides. Unlike a shelf board from a hardware store, the cover panel carries the decor of the Nobilia range, allowing the shelf to match the existing kitchen in front color or cabinet decor.

In freely selectable widths, the cover panel ranges from 25 cm to 258 cm and can be cut to any shelf size, from a narrow niche to a 30 cm-wide shelf compartment to a 60 cm-wide compartment based on the kitchen cabinet grid. The depth is variably adjustable up to 60 cm, allowing a side depth of around 58 cm to be matched precisely. You coordinate the thickness and decor with the panels.

A cover panel can be used as an interior window sill if the look is meant to continue from the kitchen. The variable depth starting at 25 cm covers the typical window sill depth of 20 to 30 cm, and the freely selectable width up to 258 cm is sufficient for standard window lengths. The program decor visually ties the window sill to the front or cabinet of the kitchen.

An interior window sill is a construction task for a tradesperson. For stability, it rests on the masonry, is installed with монтаж adhesive or foam, and sealed at the joints. The cover panel provides the surface in the matching decor, while installation is handled by a local tradesperson. Thermal stress above a radiator must be taken into account.

What thicknesses are available for Nobilia cover panels
For a cover panel, thickness determines two things at once. It defines the material and therefore the front color in which the cover panel is available, because lacquer is only available in 1 and 1.6 cm, while laminate is available in all four thicknesses. And it shapes the visual effect in the room, from a slim, modern line to a substantial look that clearly frames a piece of furniture. In addition to the four standard thicknesses, the cornice top panel covers the special case in which a wall cabinet is finished at the top. Choose below the thickness or the cornice top panel that suits your plan.
Cover panels in 10 mm thickness
The 1 cm thick cover panel is the most delicate version in the Nobilia range and creates a slim, modern line at the top. It fits wherever the finish should stay in the background so the front can act as the main design element. This is the only thickness in which laminate, lacquer, and real wood veneer are all available side by side. A lacquer front can be covered here, and a real wood front finds its matching cover panel exclusively in 1 cm thickness.
Cover panels in 16 mm thickness
The 1.6 cm thick cover panel is the common standard thickness and works well with most kitchen styles without drawing too much attention. It is the safe choice wherever the top edge should be neither noticeably slim nor noticeably massive. Laminate and lacquer are available in 1.6 cm thickness, giving existing customers a wide color selection here. The Sakura design variant in Como Oak reproduction decor is also available exclusively in this thickness.
Cover panels in 25 mm thickness
The 2.5 cm thick cover panel creates a clearly visible top edge without appearing bulky. It fits wherever the top finish is intended to be a calm design element. In large kitchens, this thickness visually completes the front height at the top. The 2.5 cm thick panel is available in laminate, not in lacquer, so existing customers with lacquer fronts should plan their cover panel in 1 or 1.6 cm thickness instead.
Cover panels in 50 mm thickness
The 5 cm thick cover panel creates a massive look that clearly frames a piece of furniture and is planned as a distinct design accent. It suits wall cabinets or as a visible upper finish of a highboard, where the top edge is meant to carry visual weight. Nobilia offers this thickness in laminate, not in lacquer and not in real wood veneer. Existing customers with lacquer fronts should instead plan their cover panel in 1 or 1.6 cm thickness.
Cover panel as a cornice panel
The cornice panel is the functional special group within the cover panel range and finishes wall cabinets at the top instead of sitting on a standing piece of furniture. It is selected to match the wall cabinet design and is available in several thicknesses. Unlike standing cover panels, it is based on the wall cabinet configuration, not on a single installation situation. The cornice panel overview shows which thickness and material are suitable for your wall cabinets.
What materials and decor colors are available for Nobilia cover panels
Nobilia cover panels are available in three material groups: laminate, lacquered cover panels, and real wood veneer. The material group determines in which thicknesses a cover panel is available. Laminate is available in all four thicknesses, lacquered cover panels in 1 and 1.6 cm. Real wood veneer is available exclusively in 1 cm thickness.
Within the material groups, the surfaces are sorted into eight finish groups, plus the real wood veneer variant. The following overview shows which group is available in which thickness and which example decors from the range belong to it.
Execution groups
Matt (MA)
Matt decors have a calm surface and match all cabinet colors as well as a selection of front and worktop decors. Available in thicknesses of 1 cm and 1.6 cm as well as 2.5 cm and 5 cm. Examples from the range include 106 White and 198 Sierra Oak reproduction.
High gloss (HG)
High-gloss decors have a reflective surface and are matched to high-gloss fronts. Available in 1.6 cm as well as 2.5 cm and 5 cm thicknesses. Examples are 023 White High Gloss and 702 Magnolia High Gloss
Lacquer laminate (LL)
Lacquer laminate decors have a matt to silk-matt surface and are often chosen for handleless plans. Available in 1 and 1.6 cm thickness. Examples are 966 Lacquer Laminate, Fjord Blue ultra matt from Easytouch and 492 Lacquer, Coral Premium Matt from Senso.
Ultra high-gloss lacquer (LAU)
Ultra high-gloss lacquer stands for a lacquered, high-gloss surface with the highest gloss level in the range. Available in 1.6 cm thickness in 470 Lacquer, Alpine White Ultra High Gloss and 467 Lacquer, Sand Ultra High Gloss from Focus.
Matt lacquer (LAM)
Matt lacquer decors have a genuine lacquer surface with a matt, fingerprint-resistant look and are chosen for calm, solid-color fronts. Available in 1 and 1.6 cm thickness. Examples are 168 Lacquer, Alpine White Matt and 175 Lacquer, Magnolia Matt as well as 173 Lacquer, White Matt.
Lacquer, Perfect Matt (LPM)
Perfect Matt lacquer decors have a particularly deep matt lacquer surface and represent the finest matt finish in the lacquer range. Available exclusively in 1.6 cm thickness. Examples from the range are 507 Lacquer, Alpine White Perfect Matt and 508 Lacquer, Silk Grey Perfect Matt as well as 791 Lacquer, Black Perfect Matt.
High-gloss lacquer (LAH)
High-gloss lacquer decors have a genuine lacquered high-gloss surface with a clear sense of depth. Available in 1 and 1.6 cm thickness. Examples from the range are 512 Lacquer, White High Gloss and 519 Lacquer, Silk Grey High Gloss as well as 516 Lacquer, Alpine White High Gloss.
Xtra (X)
Xtra decors are visually and haptically based on the Xtra worktops and have a natural-looking textured surface. Available in all four thicknesses in 373 Xtra Grey Slate reproduction and 367 Artisan Oak reproduction, as well as in 381 Alpine White Xtra Matt.
Cover panels in real wood veneer
Real wood veneer is the only material class in the cover panel range with a genuine wood surface and is available exclusively in 10 mm thickness. The Native Oak grade features brushed oak veneer with a horizontal grain direction on a wood-based carrier board.
The edge finish distinguishes the three material classes in the range. Coated versions have a polymer edge in cabinet color, lacquered versions a lacquered edge in front color. The veneered panel has a 2 mm thick veneer edge with the same grain as the top surface of the panel, so the transition from panel to edge is not visible as a material change.
This variant belongs to the real wood range, which includes cover panels, sideboards, highboards, tall cabinets, and matching tables. This allows you to plan kitchen, dining room, and living room in matching material and color.
Cover panels for Sakura kitchens
For the Sakura design line, end panels and cover panels are specified in decor 362 Como Oak reproduction, in 16 mm thickness, combined with the 315 screw-on handle rail in Como Oak. The Sakura cover panels use the short designations ADBS16 for highboards and tall cabinets, KBWS16 for wall cabinet cornice finishes. Standard cover panels in 16 mm thickness outside the Sakura line carry the decor of the selected range and are not tied to 362. The recommended option is the APSLNS61 Slim Line worktop. Sakura is not available for the Cascada 684, Frame 419, Inline 526, Nordic 782, Pura 917, and Sylt 706 ranges.

The planning guide leads you from your cabinet type to the right cover panel solution. Here you will find which panel belongs on which cabinet, with what depth and dimensional logic, and which adjustments your design requires. The dimensional logic of the entire range is summarized graphically in the overview at the end.
Planning cover panels by cabinet type
Tall cabinet
The tall cabinet is the most common application for a cover panel. A Nobilia tall cabinet has a carcass depth of 56.1 cm, while the cover panel is supplied with a depth of 58.5 cm. The additional 2.4 cm create a flush finish with the front surface and a smooth connection to the cabinet on the wall side. If several tall cabinets stand next to each other, the freely cut-to-size laminate range creates a continuous line up to 258 cm wide and can therefore span up to four tall cabinets with a carcass width of 60 cm each. In lacquer, the tall cabinet run is available in four fixed width classes, 93.6 cm, 123.6 cm, 153.6 cm, and 183.6 cm, which you can shorten as needed, with Nobilia finishing the cut edge with a polymer edge.
Highboard
Highboards are low enough that their top surface is visible, which is why the cover panel forms a visible, abrasion-resistant surface here. At 58.5 cm, the depth follows the same logic as the tall cabinet because highboards have the same carcass depth of 56.1 cm. For a single standard highboard with a 60 cm carcass width, fixed panel widths are available as a ready-made code, without custom dimensions. Highboards with a built-in oven, microwave, or fully automatic coffee machine require a ventilation grille in the cover panel because otherwise appliance heat builds up inside the cabinet and reduces the service life of the appliance. The LGADB grille is available in 1.6 cm, 2.5 cm, and 5 cm thickness; the 1 cm thick panel is not suitable because the material thickness is too low for the grille cut-out.
Wall cabinet
Wall cabinets are not finished at the top with a standing cover panel, but with a cornice panel, which is described in the following section. The most common wall cabinet carcass depth is 35 cm, and the range also includes deeper variants up to 90 cm. This depth difference becomes a planning issue when a wall cabinet run is meant to align flush with a tall cabinet run. You have two options for this. Either you plan standard wall cabinets with a depth of 35 cm and accept the depth offset relative to the tall cabinet run, or you use refrigerator bridging cabinets with a carcass depth of 56.1 cm, which create a flush run across the entire top edge.
Sideboard
Sideboards and midi cabinets in bathroom and living space designs have a carcass depth of 35 cm and therefore a shallower construction than tall cabinets and highboards. The matching cover panel comes in the 37.4 cm depth class, in laminate via the variable range and in lacquer via the fixed ADBML-38 range. For standard sideboards with carcass widths of 30, 50, or 60 cm, the lacquered panels are available as fixed codes in widths of 33.6 cm, 53.6 cm, and 63.6 cm. Here too, Nobilia finishes the cut edge with a polymer edge if you shorten the width.
Freestanding appliance
Freestanding appliances do not follow any cabinet grid and therefore require their own planning logic. Depending on the design, a side-by-side refrigerator is about 90 cm wide and, at 60 to 75 cm, deeper than a standard cabinet run; it also needs side clearance for opening the doors. The cover panel spans the appliance and the adjacent cabinets via the freely cut-to-size range and brings them to a shared top edge. An appliance housing cabinet for a washing machine or tumble dryer stands at the end of a run or freestanding in the room and is framed by two end panels and the cover panel. The panel depth must match the cover panel depth so that the front edges align in one line, and a design with panels on both sides in 1 cm thickness is technically not possible.
Cover top with LED lighting
When planning modern wall cabinets, a cover top can be mounted as an elegant finish on the underside of the cabinets. Optionally, this cover top can be fitted with recessed LED built-in lights, which are integrated as spots into the panel surface and evenly illuminate the work area below. The illuminated version is planned in 16 mm or 25 mm thickness, since the recessed light requires sufficient material thickness for installation.
The cover top runs flush on the right and left with the cabinet width, so wall and tall cabinets can be planned seamlessly next to each other. In kitchens where the wall cabinets have the same carcase depth of 56.1 cm as the tall cabinets, both cabinet types finish flush to the surface. This creates a calm line layout and a continuous appearance across the entire kitchen run.
Cornice panels and cornice trims
Cornice panels finish wall cabinets at the top or bottom. The range includes two types, which differ in whether a separate cornice trim is added.
Cover panel as a cornice panel
The KBW cornice panel finishes the wall cabinet at the top or bottom and replaces the classic cornice trim. This design transfers the panel material of the cover panel to the top edge of the wall cabinet and stands independently.
This design is available in two thicknesses. KBW16 has a panel thickness of 1.6 cm, KBW25 has 2.5 cm. Both have a polymer edge at the front and sides in cabinet color.

Two depths are available. 37.4 cm for wall cabinets with a carcass depth of 35 cm, and 58.5 cm for highboards and tall cabinets with a carcass depth of 56 cm. At the factory, both depths are cut variably to size. The maximum length is 258 cm per continuous piece, and billing is per started 10 cm.
The KBWB variant has a polymer edge on all four sides. You choose it for designs with a visible rear side, for example above a wall cabinet run used as a room divider. KBWB16 and KBWB25 have the same depths and lengths as KBW.
Cornice panel for attached cornice trims
The KB cornice panel is the classic top finish for wall cabinets and is designed at the factory to receive a separately ordered cornice trim. Unlike the KBW, the KB is made of cabinet material and is available in all cabinet colors in the Nobilia range, allowing the wall cabinet carcass and cornice panel to be planned in matching material and color. You choose the cabinet panel color and cornice trim color independently of each other.

Three depths are available. 35 cm for standard wall cabinets, 56 cm for wall cabinets in the carcass depth of highboards and tall cabinets, and variable 57 to 90 cm for projected designs and connections to tall cabinet or highboard runs.
The maximum length is 340 cm in the two shallower depth classes KB 35 and KB 56, exceeding the 258 cm standard of the other cover panels and the KBW. The deepest variant, KB 90, is limited to 258 cm. Billing is per started 10 cm.
The KBB variant is designed to receive a cornice trim attached on both sides and has identical depths and lengths as the KB. KBB 35 and KBB 56 extend up to 340 cm, KBB 90 up to 258 cm.
Real wood veneer in planning
Real wood veneer cover tops follow their own sizing logic, which differs from all coated variants. While laminate and lacquer tops are cut to size, real wood veneer is available only in fixed dimensions, with both width and depth set. The range includes twelve fixed size combinations in 1 cm thickness; subsequent trimming is not permitted for this variant because the veneered edge runs continuously around it and cutting would open it up. So if you are planning a real wood cover top, you choose the appropriate size from the available dimensions instead of specifying a custom size.
Sakura
In the Sakura design variant, the cover top is available exclusively in a 1.6 cm thickness under the factory code ADBS16. No other thickness can be selected because the design variant includes only this one code.
Three depth variants cover the Sakura cabinet types: 39.4 cm for sideboards, 50.5 cm for medium-height units, and 60.5 cm for highboards and tall cabinets. Each depth is variably cut at the factory and follows the depth of the selected Sakura side panel, which is 392 or 603 mm depending on the cabinet type.
Sakura color selection & planning
In the Sakura configuration, the Slim Line worktop, side panel, and cover top align to the same depth dimension within each cabinet type class. The continuous frame line results from this depth coordination, complemented by handle 315 and the continuous decor 362 Como Oak reproduction. The maximum length of the cover top is 258 cm per continuous piece.
Sakura cannot be combined with the Cascada, Frame, Inline, Nordic, Pura, and Sylt ranges.
Adjustments for cover panels
Across all cabinet types, the cover panel can be adapted to special situations. Four adjustments cover the most common planning cases.
Edge banding
The rear edge of a cover panel is unfinished as standard because it usually sits against the wall. If you are planning the panel with the rear visible or freestanding, you can order rear edge banding as a surcharge item. The order codes depend on the thickness, from ADB10-K for 1 cm to ADB-K5 for 5 cm, and it is charged per started 10 cm with a minimum order quantity of 60 cm length.
Bevels and rounded shapes
Special machining adapts the cover panel to external corners, projections, and sloping ceilings. Machining ADB-AS stands for the bevel or rounding on island and peninsula outer corners, where the panel extends freely into the room and the cut edge needs a soft transition. Machining ADB-ZS refers to the Z-shaped cut-out used to route the panel around wall projections, window reveals, or sloping ceilings. Both are available in 1 cm, 1.6 cm, and 2.5 cm thickness.
Tongue-and-groove joint
Corner layouts connect two cover panels via a tongue-and-groove joint. Machining AP-NF applies to the 2.5 cm thick version, while APSL-NF applies to the 1.6 cm thick Slim Line version. Production mills both at the factory and automatically adds the measurement for the milling to the order length; the installation material is included with the delivery.
Ventilation grille
Ventilation grilles are necessary for highboards with built-in electrical appliances because otherwise heat from the oven, microwave, or fully automatic coffee machine builds up in the cabinet. The LGADB grille measures 57.4 cm in width, 5.1 cm in depth, and 1.45 cm in height; the corresponding cut-out is milled at the factory. It is available for cover panels in 1.6 cm, 2.5 cm, and 5 cm thickness; the 1 cm thick panel is not suitable because its material thickness is too low for the cut-out.
Quality and structure of the cover panels
The structure of a cover panel determines how it looks, how easy it is to maintain, and how long it withstands daily wear. All Nobilia cover panels share the same basic structure of support board and edge banding, but differ in the visible surface, from coated lacquer laminate to real lacquer to real wood veneer. The following sections show what a cover panel consists of, what the anti-fingerprint coating does, how lacquer laminate differs from real lacquer, and why real wood veneer occupies a special position.
What a Nobilia cover panel is made of
Every Nobilia cover panel consists of a wood-based support board coated on both sides. The coating is matched to the selected front program so that the cover panel comes in the same decor as the kitchen front or cabinet. The front edge and the two side edges are finished with a polymer edge, a plastic edge firmly bonded to the support board that prevents the cut edge from splintering or swelling when exposed to moisture.
The rear edge remains unfinished as standard because it usually sits against the wall, and it can also be edged for an additional charge if the rear of the panel remains visible.
What the anti-fingerprint coating does
The anti-fingerprint coating is a wear-resistant, highly cross-linked functional layer that reduces fingerprints on the surface and makes it more resistant to daily use. It is used on the ultra-matt lacquer laminate line of the Easytouch and Natura programs as well as on the Perfect matt and Premium matt lacquer fronts. The associated surface consists of a melamine particleboard made from 100 percent recycled material and has been awarded the Blue Angel label.
Not every cover panel carries this coating. Standard lacquer laminate in the Cascada, Flash, Inox, and Touch programs as well as the high-gloss decors are produced without an anti-fingerprint layer.
How lacquer laminate and real lacquer differ
Lacquer laminate and real lacquer create a similar look by different means. Lacquer laminate is a lacquered PET film applied to the support board and, depending on the line, comes in a high-gloss or soft-matt finish. Nobilia describes lacquer laminate as an attractive alternative to real lacquer fronts with a very good price-performance ratio. Real lacquer, on the other hand, is created by applying multiple coats of lacquer directly to the substrate.
Perfect matt lacquer and the related Premium matt feature lacquered edges all around and a special matt technology that ensures brilliant colors with high abrasion and scratch resistance. Ultra high-gloss lacquer finishes the edge all around with a PP edge and achieves the highest gloss level in the range.
Why real wood veneer holds a special position
Real wood veneer is the only cover panel surface without decor and without film. Real wood veneer is applied to the support board on both sides with a horizontal grain direction. The front and side edges are finished with a 2 mm thick veneered edge so that the wood look continues all around. Real wood retains an open-pored surface and therefore reacts differently to moisture and care than the coated variants, which is why stains should not be left to dry.
The real wood veneer cover panels come in fixed widths and depths; subsequent trimming to size is not permitted for this variant.

What you order along with a cover panel
Several order items are planned at the same time for a cover panel. These include end panels for the side finish, ventilation grilles for highboards with built-in appliances, edge banding for visible rear sides, and custom machining for island, projection, or sloped-ceiling applications.
End panels
End panels form the side finish when the cover panel projects beyond the last cabinet carcass. The end panel depth must match the cover panel depth so that the front edges align in one line. End panels with a depth of 60.3 cm meet the wall with a cover panel depth of 60.5 cm. End panels with a depth of 39.2 cm match a cover panel depth of 39.4 cm. The thickness selection corresponds to that of cover panels in 10 mm and 16 mm as well as 25 mm and 50 mm.
Worktops
Cover panel and worktop complete the kitchen plan as two horizontal surfaces. Both components can be planned in the same decor so that a continuous material line runs from the work surface to the upper cabinet edge. They meet at the top front edge and must be coordinated in depth and thickness. A slim Slim Line worktop complements a narrow cover panel in 1 cm or 1.6 cm to create a continuous, modern line. With standard 3.8 cm worktops, a medium-thickness cover panel of around 2.5 cm fits the overall look better. In the Sakura design line, the Slim Line worktop (APSLNS61), end panels, and cover panel align in depth so that the frame look of the Sakura configuration continues in one line.
Niche cladding
Niche claddings cover the wall between the worktop and wall cabinet and serve two purposes. They protect the wall from splashing water, heat, and cooking grease where the sink and stove create the greatest stress.
At the same time, they form the vertical design surface of the kitchen where materials and decors become visible. With cabinet, shelf, and worktop decors, you create links to cabinets, the work surface, and cover panels. With glass, mirror, or quartz stone, you add a material accent.
Accessories for cover tops
Depending on the plan, a cover top requires one or two additional components that you order at the same time. The LGADB ventilation grille channels heat from built-in appliances out of the highboard and can be planned into cover tops from 16 mm thickness. The 9888 spacer profile maintains the distance between the front and the lower crown top when converting a wall cabinet run, allowing the door to open freely. The crown molding finishes a KB crown top at the top and is factory-fitted. The DB-WRA ceiling filler panel bridges the gap between the top edge of the cabinet and the ceiling.

About the manufacturer Nobilia
Nobilia, manufacturer of cover tops since 1945
Nobilia has been producing cover tops, crown tops, and its entire kitchen range exclusively in Germany since 1945. The family-owned company based in Verl, East Westphalia, manufactures at four locations in Verl-Sürenheide, Verl-Kaunitz, Gütersloh, and Saarlouis, with a combined production area of 439,000 square meters.
Every cover top is made in the same automated serial production process that also produces the cabinets and worktops. More than 3,900 consignments leave the factories every day, which corresponds to an annual production of around 855,000 pieces of furniture. Each piece of furniture is individually planned according to the order and, despite the high volume, manufactured as a one-off, so your cover top is produced in the ordered design, depth, and length.
Delivery is handled by the company’s own fleet. By scanning during loading and unloading, Nobilia achieves a misdelivery rate of 0.1 percent and an on-time delivery rate of around 97.7 percent, a top value in the furniture industry.
Sustainability at Nobilia
The construction of every cover top begins with a three-layer particle board containing up to 70 percent recycled content. The middle layer consists almost entirely of reclaimed wood from cascade use, while the top layers made of new wood carry the coating or veneer. The wood used comes from PEFC-certified forests, where a new tree is planted for every tree felled. At the end of the kitchen’s life cycle, the particle board is technically 100 percent recyclable.
In terms of emission standards, the wood-based materials achieve the highest level of low formaldehyde content according to California CARB2 and US TSCA Title VI. Some of the wood-based materials also carry the Japanese F4Star seal with even stricter limits than CARB2. The finished furniture is awarded the highest emission class A according to RAL-GZ 437, the emissions label of the German Furniture Quality Association.
Durability in production and logistics
Durability is the second axis of sustainability. The double-sided coating of the carrier board keeps the panel dimensionally stable over time, and the polymer edge on the front and side edges protects the panel edge from moisture ingress. Nobilia states an average service life of at least 15 years for its furniture, supported by DGM-tested fittings with 80,000 opening and closing cycles, four times the market standard of 20,000 cycles.
Production and logistics for the cover tops are handled from the Verl factory. The photovoltaic system at Plant III, commissioned in 2024, covers about half of the plant’s electricity demand with around 2 million kilowatt-hours annually. Wood waste from panel production, around 90,000 tons per year, heats the factory halls during the cold months. As a result, the CO2 footprint in 2022 was 81 kilograms per kitchen produced.
Find the right cover top
The decision for a cover top is based on two axes that you can set directly in the filter above. Thickness defines the style direction, from slim 1 cm and 1.6 cm for the modern line to the substantial 5 cm variant for a deliberate accent. Depth follows the installation situation, from the standard depth of a tall cabinet run to 60 cm and more for side-by-side refrigerator conversions. The proven sequence is to set the thickness first and then narrow down by depth.
